Advantages of VPSA Technology Over Traditional Methods

1. Extremely low oxygen production cost (core advantage)
Compared with traditional methods: Compared with purchasing liquid oxygen or bottled oxygen, VPSA is an on-site generation, which eliminates a lot of intermediate costs such as liquefaction, transportation, storage, and vaporization. For chemical companies that continuously use a large amount of oxygen, transportation and storage costs are often higher than the production cost of oxygen itself.

Compared with cryogenic method: Although cryogenic air separation equipment can produce ultra-high purity oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, it requires huge investment, high energy consumption, and long start-up time (usually requiring tens to tens of hours), making it suitable for large-scale applications that require multiple gases. VPSA devices have lower investment costs and relatively lower energy consumption (especially in small and medium-sized enterprises), and electricity consumption is their main cost. When the electricity price is appropriate, oxygen costs are highly competitive.

Compared with the basic PSA, VPSA adds a vacuum pump suction step on the basis of PSA, which can more thoroughly desorb nitrogen on the adsorbent, thereby reducing adsorption pressure, improving oxygen recovery rate, and reducing energy consumption. Compared to traditional PSA, VPSA typically reduces energy consumption by 20% -30%.


2. Scale and flexibility perfectly match chemical needs
The optimal economic scale: The single oxygen production of VPSA oxygen concentrators is usually between several hundred to tens of thousands of standard cubic meters per hour. This scale precisely covers the oxygen demand of most chemical enterprises (such as methanol, ethylene oxide, TDI/MDI, waste incineration, pulp bleaching, oxygen enriched combustion, etc.), achieving economies of scale.

Strong load regulation capability: Chemical production does not always operate at full capacity. The VPSA system can be easily adjusted within the load range of 50% -100%, automatically adjusting the equipment operation status according to the actual gas consumption, avoiding energy waste caused by "big horses pulling small cars". The load adjustment range of the cryogenic method device is narrow and the response is slow.

Quick start stop: The VPSA system starts quickly, usually taking only 30 minutes to 1 hour from startup to producing qualified oxygen, and can adapt well to non continuous production or backup needs. Starting and stopping the cryogenic method once takes a long time and consumes a huge amount of energy.


3. Safety and reliability
Eliminating transportation and storage risks: On site oxygen production avoids the transportation and storage of large amounts of liquid oxygen or high-pressure oxygen, fundamentally reducing safety risks such as leaks and explosions associated with it.

Purity controllable: The oxygen purity produced by VPSA is usually 90% -95%, which is sufficient for the vast majority of chemical oxidation reactions (such as oxidation reactions, catalytic cracking, oxygen enriched combustion assistance, etc.) without the need to pay additional costs for higher purity. If higher purity is required, purification equipment can be added later.

High degree of automation: Modern VPSA devices use PLC or DCS systems for fully automatic control, with stable operation and no need for dedicated personnel to be on duty at all times. Regular inspections and maintenance are sufficient.


4. Examples of specific chemical application scenarios
Environmental Protection and Incineration: In sewage treatment, chemical waste liquid, and waste gas incinerators, providing oxygen enriched air through VPSA can significantly improve combustion efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and decrease waste gas emissions.

Oxidation reaction: Many chemical synthesis processes are strongly exothermic oxidation reactions (such as ethylene to ethylene oxide, acrylic acid to acrylic acid, xylene oxidation to PTA, etc.). The use of oxygen enriched air or pure oxygen can increase reaction rate, increase yield, reduce reactor size and exhaust gas volume.

Gasification process: In fields such as coal chemical industry and waste gasification, oxygen is required as a gasifying agent.

Alternative air: In some processes that require high concentrations of oxygen, replacing air with oxygen produced by VPSA can avoid introducing a large amount of useless nitrogen, thereby reducing equipment scale, improving reaction efficiency, and simplifying subsequent tail gas treatment.
